The Danish capital staged the World Badminton Championships for a fourth time, following 1983, 1991 and 1999, and the country could bid again in "around 2021".

This year's tournament, which drew to a close at the Ballerup Super Arena yesterday, has been given high praise.

"Ballerup Super Arena has been superb for badminton and the crowds have created a fantastic atmosphere, especially over the weekend when tickets were sold out," said Denmark's Badminton World Federation President Poul-Erik Høyer.

"We wish to commend the hosts, Badminton Denmark; Sport Event Denmark, all other Danish sponsors and the outstanding team of volunteers, for the warm hospitality and the way they have welcomed the badminton family to Copenhagen.

"It has been a world-class advertisement for our sport."

China's Chen Long and Spaniard Carolina Marin claimed the men's and women's singles titles in Copenhagen.

Badminton Denmark chief executive Charlotte Malmroes said: "I am extremely proud of this world-class event, staged to perfection by our organisation and partners.

"We have set new standards for how to organise a great World Championship, and have created a spectacular show for spectators and viewers across the globe.

"At the same time, we have once again seen countless committed volunteers, without whom this event would not be possible."

After the success of this year's title, Sport Event Denmark are eyeing up a bid as soon as 2021 for the Championships to be held in the under-construction Royal Arena in Copenhagen.

The venue, which will be able to seat up to 15,000 for concerts, is due to open in the autumn of 2016.

Sport Event Denmark chief executive Lars Lundov said: "I dare say that we would like to bid for the event again...in around 2021."
